I want to talk about the super sweet thing I saw last night.
Yesterday I was sitting on the loveseat in my room. Charity walked in, and while never letting go of the door handle, looked all around, then obviously not finding who she was looking for, closed the door again.
At the same time, Sam had been hidden by the wall by Steve's nightstand, and was standing frozen and poised in silence. She didn't see him. Then he sighed a sigh of relief when she left and his head turned down again, doing whatever he had been doing before.
And I went back to watching a show.
Time passed. I am thinking maybe about 10 minutes. And Sam was still standing by the nightstand super quiet and still with his back to me. Realizing that something was going on, I stopped the show and started watching him. He noticed he was being watched and asked me "How do you spell 'what'?"
I spelled it out for him.
Then he proceeded to keep asking me how to spell other words. I realized later he spent a long time just getting an envelope, then addressing the envelope, then cutting up a piece of paper to fit in the envelope, and finally to write. And I was getting a kick out of just how important I could tell this note was to him. I mean, the concern on his face about making this perfect was just too obvious. I figured he had a crush and he was working on a Valentine's Day card for her. So I asked him what he was doing.
Sam - "Writing a note."
Me- "Who is the note for?"
Sam- "Charity"
Me- "Oh how nice of you!"
And he kept working. At the end of the note he realized he had a problem with spacing. And started getting upset. I assured him it would all be ok and to please let me show him that it can still be fixed. He cheered up and brought me the note. Then after I read it, he asked "Can you please just write the word 'something' in there for me so it will fit?" I agreed.
The note read "from Sam to Charity I love you so I will do something for you whatever you want I will do". I think from start to finish, he spent about a half hour on this note. He is very smart, but writing is not his thing if you can't tell. Although he is only in kindergarten.
I told Sam that the note was really sweet! And he got a little emotional and said "I just love Charity soooooo soooooooo much and I want to do something for her."
After some more talking, we agreed it was time to show Charity the card. Sam was so excited and so nervous! It was just too adorable. He grabbed the card, threw open my door, and yelled for Charity. She came bounding around the corner. She had been looking for him this whole time to play.
He gave her the card and then ran away to hide because he was too nervous to watch her reaction. I told them both to come in my room so we can all witness this together. So they agreed and came into view. Charity opened the card and read it and immediately said "Awe Sam! That is so nice of you! Thank you!" Then Sam said "So what do you want?" Confused, Charity said "Hu?" And I reminded her that the note said he wanted to do something for her, "whatever [she] wanted".
Charity- "Oh Sam! You don't need to do anything for me!"
Sam, dropping to his knees in front of her, in disappointment cries "But I wanted to do something nice for you!"
Charity, thinking fast about how to make him feel better, without taking advantage of him says "No. It's not like that. I just think your note was nice enough. You don't have to do anything for me."
Sam- "But I really wanted to do something for you!"
Charity- "Ok then, you can go get me a drink of water."
Sam, jumping up in excitement, "OK! I'll go now!" Then he runs off for a split second before stopping suddenly to say "Wait! That's all?! I wanted to do more!"
Charity- "Ok, then get me a cup with a can of soda!"
Sam, appeased says, "Ok! And I will get ice too!"
Charity- "Ok thanks!"
These two are just so sweet to each other so much of the time. They do get in little arguments sometimes, but generally they adore each other.
For example, Sam really wanted to do gymnastics but was too afraid to do it without Charity. Charity did not want to take gymnastics, but she knew how bad Sam wanted her there, so she agreed to do it for him.
And she worked hard the other day writing up all of his Valentine's Day cards to all of his classmates. And she even gave up her own candy leftover from what she bought for her own friends and classmates, to his classmates. It was really sweet.
I had a conversation with Sam yesterday about how he is such a nice boy and how proud of him I was for that.
He got a little shy and quietly said "It's because I chose to be a nice boy." I asked him what he meant by that, because he was obviously holding something personal back. He then explained to me that during the Summer he was thinking about it and decided that when school started he was going to try really hard to always be a nice boy. And I tell ya, I started thinking about how he has been this school year, and guess what? He HAS been such a nice boy for 5 months! And the very first month of school-wide awards for good character, Sam was chosen. This boy amazes me. And Charity too. Amazing kids.
