Panel Discussion #2

Remember my last "Panel Discussion"? Well, this one is totally on a different topic.
Here's what I want to chat about:

What kind of blog posts are the most interesting to you?
What are your favorite kind of posts? Your least favorite kind? Etc...

This is where I am going to ask all of you to put on here what you like to read about on blogs the most. What qualities make a post good or bad? Not just my blog. This way we can all get input and if it interests you, improve the reading pleasure of your loyal followers. So it's a lot to ask, but I want as much input as possible and lets keep it real. Be anonymous if you must.

Your recent post on Hobbies Past Present and Future was an awesome post (sorry I didn't comment on it... I'm commenting now), and just what I like to see. I loved it because it told a lot about you, some I already knew, and some I didn't have any idea. It showed your personality and was easy and fun to read and I liked your little pictures. Pictures always make a post better. Personally I prefer the funny posts to the serious. While it's nice to post a tribute to a spouse, or birthday person (I've done it myself several times) I always feel like those are kinda personal to the people involved and I usually just skim past them.
I like trip reports too - like your post about your recent trip with the kids - the four corners and arches pics were great!
And I like discussion posts like this one. You're a great blogger - keep doing what your doing!

Did I miss panel discussion post #1?

I love anything my friends and family post. I especially love ones that just show what they do on an average day. It's always fun to see videos too. My all time favorite post of yours was the video you did for FHE. That was the best!

Favorite Kinds: Ones that show day-to-day stuff. I like the Dave Barry/Erma Bombeck type stuff that tells average everyday events in a funny way with interesting insights and fun writing. I also enjoyed your Hobbies post which told a lot about you in a really clever way. Anything that shows a little insight into ones personality is gold.

Least Favorite Kinds: While I like a good "gush" about someone as much as the next blogger, there are some that go a little beyond that. The ones that go beyond into the loveydovey, way personal stuff make me reeeeeally uncomfortable like suddenly I'm a Peeping Tom looking into their bedroom window or something. I don't know. Maybe I'm dead inside?

I like the posts that make me laugh. And I don't think everyone has to be funny, I laugh at things that aren't supposed to be funny all the time. I just feel like I come to the blogs for an upper. But it's ok if not every single post is an upper, just as long as the majority are. I also like the ones where I feel like I am learning something new. I liked your hobbies post too. I liked when Markie taught us all to do this. I like vacation posts. (Especially if it was a vacation I went on.) I like when you did that tribute to me, even though you didn't post it yet, but it's ok, I'm giving you permission now to go ahead with it now. I like hearing about the kids, work, the crazy wards, family, friends, and especially the videos of your hubby dancing.

PS I loved the video of the family dancing as well. Videos are like BlogTV... two of my favorite things combined!

Great input everyone. I really appreciate it.

Emily: Panel Discussion #1 was the one about what is ok and not ok to do with your spouse in front of your kids. Remember now? It was a while back.

Good points all around. I agree with them all. Personally I post what I want to post about. Not what I think other people will like but what I like/thinkisfunny/wanttoshare. It's my creative outlet. That being said I know that lots of people look at my blog and snoop even (hollah to lurkers!) which is cool. So I have to know that I can't be too personal unless I really don't care if people know (or want to know) a certain something about me. Like, how my kids have eleventy four toothbrushes and I don't know how long or which ones they use have been there.

I like posts with photos. I like hearing about everyday life. I also like hearing about everyones kids and seeing how much they have grown or funny things they have done. (like the one Amy just posted about Calvin making his bed). It's just great keeping in contact and seeing how everyone is doing. I love hearing ideas such as, Emily's organization or recipes or activities. You have a great blog always enjoy reading it.

^^laughing at becky's four comments. That's a record.

My deep thoughts: I think it's best to just post what you want to post, and you'll attract the readers you want to attract. Simple as that. It's impossible to please everyone, so you might as well be yourself. All of the like-minded people (with the same sense of humor and etc) will flock to your blog like Jonathan Livingston Seagull and you will fly off into the sunset together.

Having said all that deep S*, I think the posts that stand-out the most share these three magical qualities: real life, a lot of humor, and a little humility.

And of cours anything that makes me laugh. Pictures always help too in case your in a hurry and just want to see a picture to sum up the post. You know what I mean.

Personally, I like lots of pics. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. Other than that, I think you should post about what you want to, not what you think others might like. This is YOUR blog. And you can't please everyone all the time so you might as well please yourself. (Isn't that a line from a song?)
